Main Series

The Dragon Age timeline kicks off with Dragon Age: Origins, which takes place in the kingdom of Ferelden during an intense period of civil strife.

Assuming the role of a warrior, mage, or rogue, players are recruited by the Grey Wardens, an ancient order waging war with an evil force known as darkspawn.

In an attempt to stop the Darkspawn’s invasion, players must confront their commander, the Archdemon, with help from a diverse party of companions.

Following its release, Dragon Age: Origins was met with critical acclaim and is generally regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time.

Two years later, Dragon Age II was released for PC and consoles, introducing players to the world of Thedas.

In it, players pick their class and assume the role of Hawke, a lowly refugee working their way up the food chain while navigating political and social conflicts.

Much like the original, gameplay centers on third-person combat with RPG progression and managing a party of diverse companions.

Reviews for Dragon Age II were on par with its predecessor, as both critics and fans fell in love with BioWare’s latest outing.

Serving as the third mainline game in the series, Dragon Age: Inquisition sees the player character journeying to Thedas during a turbulent time of civil unrest.

This is further compacted by a mysterious tear in the sky that unleashes dangerous demons upon the world and people of Thedas.

Banding with other companions, players set out to squash the demons’ advances while settling political disputes and exploring open-world environments.

Inquisition was met with generally favorable reviews, with many critics regarding it as a significant improvement over Dragon Age II.

Due out sometime in 2023, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will be the fourth mainline game in the series and the first new Dragon Age game released in nearly a decade.

The story is set after the events of Inquisition, specifically the Trespasser expansion, and is confirmed to take place in the nation of Tevinter Imperium.

Players will assume the role of a new hero tasked with taking on Tevinter, darkspawn, and the titular Dread Wolf.

Spin-Offs

Released in 2009 as a browser-based flash game, Dragon Age Journeys is the first spin-off to the hit RPG series.

Best described as a single-player tactical RPG, it features classes, spells, talents, sound effects, and music taken directly from Dragon Age: Origins.

Despite this, the game is not considered canon as the characters, lore, and events of the story only exist within Dragon Age Journeys.

Originally, three chapters were planned for Dragon Age Journeys, however, chapters 2 and 3 were never released to the public.

Positioned as both a successor to Journeys and a tie-in to Dragon Age II, Dragon Age Legends is another spin-off flash game playable within a web browser.

The story takes place in Kaiten, a city-state located within the same region as Dragon Age II, and runs parallel to the events of Dragon Age II, making it canon to the main series.

In it, players take on the role of the ally of Ravi, the Viscount of Kaiten who entrusts them with saving his son Eiton from danger.

Much like Journeys, Legends is no longer playable as the servers were shut down in 2012, though an altered version of the game can still be downloaded for offline play.

Next up on our list of Dragon Age games in order is Heroes of Dragon Age, the first mobile-exclusive entry in the series.

Billed as a freemium tactical RPG, the game centers around squad-based strategy gameplay with the battles playing out automatically based on the player’s five-character party.

In contrast to other Dragon Age spin-offs, Heroes does not introduce any new lore but rather explores alternate outcomes for various pivotal moments throughout the series.

Upon release, the game received mixed reviews as some critics felt the automated battle system went against Heroes’ deep and strategic design.

Dragon Age: The Last Court is another web browser spin-off that offers text-based, free-to-play gameplay with a focus on resource management.

In it, players are tasked with making decisions and accepting challenges whose outcome is tied to their attributes and the current state of the realm.

The goal of the game is to accumulate Secrets, Trophies, and Viands to impress the Divine Justinia V when she visits.

To access The Last Court, players would have to go through Dragon Age Keep, a free online app that let players tailor decisions made in Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, and Inquisition.

DLC Expansions

Awakening – A major expansion set six months after Origins’ story in which players take on the role of a Grey Warden commander facing a new breed of darkspawn.

Warden’s Keep – Add-on that grants players access to the fortress of Soldier’s Peak, a quest to unlock the mysteries of the fortress, additional class talents/spells, and various other items.

The Stone Prisoner – Sold as a free add-on that’s also included with the Ultimate Edition, this DLC unlocks the character Shale as well as locations Honnleath and Cadash Thaig.

Return to Ostagar – Premium add-on focusing on the Warden’s return to Ostagar, where they discover King Cailan’s armor, Duncan’s weapons, and the motivations behind Loghain’s betrayal.

A Tale of Orzammar – A prologue DLC to the Dwarf Noble Origin that explores the actions of a dwarven nobleman and mercenary’s quest to retrieve a valuable artifact from within the Deep Roads.

The Darkspawn Chronicles – A standalone DLC adventure in which players command genlocks, hurlocks, shrieks, and ogres while exploring alternate outcomes to parts of Origins’ story.

Leliana’s Song – A standalone adventure chronicling a young Leliana’s mentorship under Marjolaine.

The Golems of Amgarrak – DLC centered on an expedition into the Deep Roads to find Amgarrak and the long-lost secrets of golem construction.

Witch Hunt – An expansion that explores the whereabouts of Morrigan, the Witch of the Wilds, who assisted the Warden during the Blight.
