Halo is one of the most beloved and iconic first-person shooters and has a rich yet controversial history of both mainline and spin-off games.

Following Halo Infinite, we thought we’d recommend some similar titles that feature arena shooter multiplayer, space sci-fi storytelling, and cool grappling hooks.

So in this list, we’ll highlight the best games like Halo Infinite to play in 2023 for anyone who wants a new game like Halo on PC or console.

What better game to kick off this list with than one developed and published by Halo’s original creators, Bungie.

Admittingly long in the tooth, Destiny 2 has had its fair share of ups and downs, with the recent Witch Queen among one of the better expansions.

In it, players pick from Titan, Warlock, and Hunter classes before setting out into the world to explore and save the universe from multiple alien factions vying for power.

Outside of the main storyline, Destiny 2 offers free-roaming exploration, public events, PvP modes, six-player raids, and more.

Splitgate is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter that combines fast-paced FPS action with the ability to place your own portals.

This greatly expands the number of tactical possibilities during firefights, allowing players with fast reflexes to get the drop on their opponents or make a quick escape.

Additionally, you’re able to line up some pretty impressive shots by using portals to create unique vantage points across Splitgate’s 20 varied maps.

Combine this with grindable challenges, leaderboards, and 15 game modes catered for casual and competitive players alike and you have a great PC shooter like Halo.

We’re glad to see Techland refined the original’s grappling hook for Dying Light 2 and expand its applications to allow for more high-flying stunts.

In it, you and your friends play as free-running survivors navigating a vast open-world filled with tons of hungry zombies.

Similar to the original, Dying Light 2 does a great job at creating tension throughout its story and gameplay by sending you to dangerous locations.

This is especially true at night when zombies become more aggressive and you have the opportunity to earn double the XP and resources.

Next up, Ready or Not is a tactical first-person shooter that emphasizes teamwork and realistic combat situations such as dealing with active shooters, bomb defusal, and hostage situations.

In it, you and a group of up to four other players oversee skilled Swat officers assigned with safeguarding civilians and eliminating dangers using lethal or non-lethal methods.

Each mode has a different set of rules of engagement and points are awarded for following them as well as using non-lethal force whenever possible.

Currently, the game only supports online co-op against AI bots but the developer plans to add competitive PvP at a later date.

Fans of open-world games like Halo Infinite may enjoy exploring the Far Cry series, including the most recent Far Cry 6.

Following Far Cry 5’s rural setting, the game harkens back to the lush tropical paradise settings of previous entries while telling a new politically-charged story.

In it, you assume control of Dani, a rebel soldier fighting against a corrupt dictatorship led by Anton Castillo (performed by Giancarlo Esposito) on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara.

Yara’s world is massive, ecologically diverse, and downright gorgeous to look at while traveling by boat, car, helicopter, and more as you wreak havoc on Castillo’s soldiers.

Next up, we have the sequel to Respawn’s criminally underrated shooter Titanfall, which suffered from poor marketing and a competitive release window.

Since then, Titanfall 2 has amassed its own cult-like following, in part due to its satisfying mech combat and parkour-inspired movement complete with a grappling hook.

The single-player campaign tells a distant future story of a soldier and his mech as they become entangled in a time-traveling conspiracy that forces them to suit up and head into battle.

It all plays out very cinematically with thrilling set-pieces and engaging battles complemented by a variety of well-designed PvP modes.

Apex Legends is what you get when Titanfall multiplayer gets mashed together with hero shooters, battle royales, and a Halo-sized map.

Each game sees up to 60 players unleashed on a sprawling map filled with randomized weapons and equipment that can be the difference between a win or a loss.

On top of that, each character or ‘Legend,’ comes equipped with a unique set of abilities that determine their preferred playstyle.

In addition to the standard battle royale mode, the game also features Arena, where players can opt to play 2v2 matches or the standard 3v3 configuration.

Revered for its rich sci-fi storytelling, the Mass Effect series has a rich and quite controversial history of releases, spin-offs, and most recently, rereleases.

In it, players take on the role of Commander Shepard as they fight to save the universe from a race of powerful machines called Reapers.

Shepard is joined by a squad of diverse companions with backgrounds in military, medicine, and engineering that are willing to lend a hand in battle and weigh in on important decisions.

Considering the series started in the early 2000s, the best way to play the original trilogy is through the remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which adds visual, technical, and gameplay refinements.

Similar to Halo Infinite, Crysis sees drops you onto a huge map filled with enemies and challenges to overcome to advance the story.

The game stands out for its visually striking environments and visual effects, which by this point are a given for anyone who remembers the “can it run Crysis?” joke in reference to PC hardware.

In it, you play as a super-soldier whose suit deflects bullets, increases speed, jump height, and physical strength, all abilities that come in hand during combat.

While the series may be starting to show its age, Crysis Remastered addresses this with improved ray-tracing lighting and support for up to 8K resolutions.

Rage 2 is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and Avalanche Studios that takes place 30 years after the events of the original Rage.

In it, you take on the role of Walker, the last surviving ranger in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by deadly mutants following an asteroid collision on Earth.

Aside from a huge open-world filled with traveling bandits and enemy bases, you’ll discover superhuman abilities that grant Walker new traversal and combat options.

Halo Infinite fans will enjoy how fluid and fast-paced Rage 2’s combat is in addition to the diversity of its environments.

Much like Halo, DOOM has a reputation for keeping players engaged by including a wide selection of unique weapons to toy around with and master.

DOOM Eternal sees you exploring new hellish landscapes teeming with demonic monsters as you fulfill your role as a badass space marine.

Environments are presented as massive jungle gyms that make it easy to avoid incoming fire as you take down the biggest threats.

The addition of a new grappling hook provides an extra layer to the game’s traversal system, with movement overall feeling more fluid than ever.

Battlefront II is another game that was once plagued by bad decisions, namely predatory microtransactions that, thankfully, EA has since been dialed back.

Serving as a sequel to the 2015 Battlefront reboot, the game features a 6-8 hour single-player story along with various PvP modes focusing on ground/space battles.

You play as one of several factions inspired by the franchise’s timeline, including clone and stormtroopers, battle droids, rebel soldiers, and even Jedis.

It’s an absolute must-play for fans of the sci-fi epic and is still receiving updates that tie in new content from new Star Wars movies.

Serving as a follow-up to The New Order, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is set in an alternate version of 1961 where the Nazis won WWII.

In it, you play as series’ protagonist BJ Blazkowicz as him and a ragtag team work together to bring down the Nazi regime in America. 

Most impressive is New Colossus’ depiction of a dark and twisted America, complete with propaganda posters plastered on city walls.

Similar to Halo, it gives players the option to dual-wield various combinations of weapons as well as vault over objects to use for cover.

Another game like Halo that primarily revolves around PvP ‘search and destroy’ gameplay, CS: GO is among the most beloved tactical shooters on the market.

In it, 5v5 teams face-off to either detonate a bomb or prevent detonation depending on which side you’re assigned to.

Both teams can also win the round by eliminating each player on the enemy team, which requires strategic aggression and coordination.

New maps, operators, weapons, and modes are frequently rolled out, most of which can be explored for little to no cost due to the game being free-to-play.

While PlanetSide 2 may be far removed from its glory days there was a time where it was considered one of the best free-to-play MMO shooters around.

Reminiscent of Halo’s large-scale battles, the game sees thousands of players combining their efforts as rivaling factions fight for control over the planet Auraxis

It plays mostly like a reimagining of the first PlanetSide with some slight improvements regarding population sizes and gameplay balancing.

Although the player counts aren’t as high as they once were, PlanetSide 2 has quietly been making a comeback following the release of its Escalation update in 2020.
