Today we’ll be taking a look at Steelcase’s flagship chair, the Steelcase Leap. It’s their bestselling product and after researching it and trying it, it’s easy to conclude why.
The Leap was designed to provide the ultimate in workspace seating. It has a number of tricks to make your life easier, and we’ll explore these more fully below.
Let’s start with the basics. This chair retails for around $1000 at the moment, depending on color, which puts it very squarely into the premium chair category. It comes in one of six colors, with the red and blue variants being particularly striking.
Moreover, it comes with a lifetime limited warranty, so hypothetically, this could be the last chair you ever have to buy. Make no mistake: if you treat this chair well, it’ll do the same for you, thanks to its posture-saving design.
We were pleasantly surprised to find out how customizable this chair is. Most office chairs offer some sort of tilt functionality, but the Leap offers an adjustable lumbar support bar and lower back firmness dial, so you can customize it to fit your needs perfectly.
The seat can be slid forwards or backward without moving the rest of the chair too. This allows Steelcase to accommodate a far wider range of body shapes, which is excellent. Wait, though: it gets better.
Even if you’re on the heavier side, you don’t have to worry. Despite its relatively compact build, this chair can comfortably hold people of up to 300 pounds.
The Leap has flexible back support. This is an unusual addition that allows it to redistribute your weight as you move or recline. This will prove invaluable if you tend to spend a lot of time at your desk.
The arms on this chair do everything you’d ever need them to. They move up and down, forwards and back, and can be angled inwards or out. So how much space does this model take up?
The Leap weighs 45.8 pounds and the seat can be raised or lowered by up to 5”. It’s just 24.8” deep and 27” wide, so it should fit in almost any office, at almost any desk.
It’s always nice to see companies being environmentally friendly, so we were pleased to see that this chair is 98% recyclable. It’s also made of up to 30% recycled materials, so it’s ethically sound.
Even though this chair has thicker padding than its competitor, the Herman Miller Aeron, it’s just as breathable thanks to the slatted back and gap at the base of the backrest. Although both chairs are extremely comfortable, extra padding is rarely a bad thing, and the Leap manages to balance it out perfectly.
Put it this way: it’s not common to find a chair that’s comfortable and that improves your health, too. Herman Miller has built their brand upon this fact, but the truth is that they aren’t the only company looking to get into this niche.
The Steelcase Leap is an outstanding chair in many ways. It’s comfortable, attractive, and offers a level of versatility that many of its competitors can’t.
For these reasons, we highly recommend this product. We know that not everyone is going to be able to squeeze it into their budgets, but those who can will find a sturdy, reliable chair that will never let them down.
